Wayne Harkey

Graveside services for Wayne Harkey, 65, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 16, 2018, in the Abernathy Cemetery with Rev. Joel Perez officiating. The family will gather to receive friends on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, from 6:00pm until 7:30pm at Abell Funeral Home.  Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy.

Mr. Harkey died Tuesday, August 14, 2018 in Lubbock, TX.

He was born on August 22, 1952 in Lubbock, TX to Billy Bryan & Ann (Tierney) Harkey and was a lifelong New Deal and Abernathy area resident. Wayne graduated from New Deal High School in 1970 and went on to play football at Eastern New Mexico State University until being drafted into the U.S. Army in  1972. He served in Special Forces until his discharge in 1976, when he returned to New Deal and married Laura Leigh Riley on April 15, 1977 in Abernathy. He was a farmer, rancher and ran trucks. He was a strong man of moral character and always tried to do what was right.

Wayne is survived by his wife Leigh Harkey of Abernathy, 4 sons Wade  and wife Sandi of Gruver, TX, Cliff and wife Rendy of Cotton Center, TX, Andy and wife Alesia of Blessing, TX and Jace and wife Corlee of Abernathy, 2 brothers, Billy R. Harkey and wife Janie of New Deal and Bryan Harkey and wife Debbie of Lubbock, a sister, Yvonne Griffis and husband Alva of New Deal and 8 grandchildren, Cale, Jake, Piper, Cora, Zeke, Ava, Addison and Colt.
