Wade Attebury

January 8, 1939 — July 31, 2025

Graveside services for Wade Attebury, 86 of Abernathy, TX, will be held Monday, August 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Joel Perez officiating. The family will gather to receive friends Sunday, August 3, 2025 from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Abell Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Wade Attebury was born on January 8, 1939, near Abernathy in Lubbock County, Texas, to Ernest H. "Rocky" and Ruby Opal (Exendine) Attebury. He always took pride in sharing a birthday with Elvis Presley—and remained a fan throughout his life. A graduate of Abernathy High School, Wade went on to serve his country in the United States Army. Wade married Alice Middleton, September 1, 1962 in Shallowater, TX. After his military service, he returned to Hale County, where he farmed for decades until retiring in 2020. Known for his attention to detail, Wade took great satisfaction in a clean field—free of weeds and with perfectly straight rows. He had a special appreciation for his cars and tractors, especially red International Harvester tractors. After receiving new International Harvester tractors, Wade and his brothers saw ways to improve their design. His keen eye and practical changes caught the attention of corporate I.H. engineers, and led to some of the ideas to be incorporated in their manufacturing process. A longtime member of Abernathy First Baptist Church, Wade was also a faithful member of the Plains Grain afternoon social hour. Wade is preceded in death by brothers Edward Attebury, Buck Attebury, and Wayne "Blackie" Attebury, sister Nadine Attebury, and sisters-in-law Mary Attebury and Liz Attebury. He is survived by his wife Alice Attebury of Abernathy, 2 daughters, Dee Ann Evans and husband Perry of Lubbock, Kristie Lea Bottoni and husband John of Lubbock, 2 grandchildren, Ryan Evans and wife Lacy of Tulsa, OK and Trevor Evans of Plano, TX, brother, Pat Attebury and sister-in-law Joan Attebury. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Strip Pearce Cemetery, 1603 Ave F, Abernathy, TX 79311 or to the American Legion, 2602 Immaculata St., Lubbock, TX 79415.
