Thomas Pettit died Sunday, August 2, 2026 in Abernathy, Texas.

Born on May 6, 1942, to Clay and Darrille (Fleming) Pettit in Lubbock, Texas, Thomas was a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man. Thomas grew up in Abernathy, where he graduated from Abernathy High School. He attended school with Betty Struve since the first grade, and they tied the knot on August 4, 1962. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

As a farmer, Thomas dedicated his life to agriculture, but he also remained actively involved in the community. He served on the Abernathy School Board, was the President of the Hale County Stock Show, and proudly belonged to the Abernathy Free Mason Lodge. Thomas was well-known for raising show pigs, helping countless young people in FFA and 4-H programs, and fostering a love of agriculture in the next generation. His family treasured their trips to stock shows and adventures in Ruidoso, creating lasting memories together.

A storyteller at heart, Thomas had a knack for telling jokes and sharing his quick wit. He was an avid fan of women's basketball and all Abernathy sports, bringing enthusiasm to every game. Beyond farming and family, he was even a poet, sharing his unique perspective on life in verse.

Thomas was an active member of the Abernathy First Baptist Church.
