Services for Roy A. Baker, 83, of Houston, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Abell Funeral Home in Abernathy, TX. Rev. Brian Brownlow, pastor of the Abernathy First United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Baker died Saturday, December 13, 2008, in Houston, TX. He was born February 3, 1925 in Abernathy, TX, to Grover C. Baker and Sarah M. Hardin Baker. He was a graduate of Texas Tech College in Lubbock, TX and was a member of the American Association of Chemical Engineers. He was a longtime resident of Baytown, TX and had resided in Houston, TX the past 32 years. Mr. Baker was a chemical Engineer and began his career with Mathison Chemical, Consolidated Chemical which later became Stauffer Chemical, currently known as Astra Zenica. He was employed with them in various Stauffer Chemical management positions and mentored many young engineers, and plant workers and encouraged them to be the best and believe they could succeed. After his retirement he continued to work with various engineering contractors specializing in solving chemical plant problems. His work with these companies included, Stubb Overbeck and Ford, Bacon & Davis he also involved himself in independent consulting and was associated with Heath and Associates. He is survived by neices and nephews, Diane Dunn of Arlington, TX, Tommy Murray of Keller, TX, Weida Anthony of Denton, TX, Toya Martin of Wichita Falls, TX, Barry Simpson of Marble Falls, TX, and Cleve Simpson of Camanche, TX, 2 sisters, Mary Baker Murray and Florene Baker Simpson, numerous nieces, nephews and friends, 2 aunts, Bettie Hardin of Abernathy, TX, and Burnie Hardin of Lubbock, TX, and his longtime friend, S. V. "Vic" Heath of Houston, TX. Abell Funeral Home
