Ronald "Ronnie" Pope died on June 26, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born on April 10, 1944, in Lubbock, to Leslie and Wynelle (Motheral) Pope. Ronnie brought joy, enthusiasm, and a kind spirit to all who knew him throughout his 82 years.
Ronnie was known for his infectious smile and a zest for life that shone through in everything he did. He loved being outdoors and found delight in anything with wheels, particularly his pickup. He cherished every opportunity to visit the family farm, where riding the tractor was a favorite pastime.
A passionate participant in the Special Olympics, Ronnie took part in bowling, the 50-meter dash, relay events, and soccer. His determination, sportsmanship, and vibrant energy were a source of inspiration to his peers and a point of pride for his family. Ronnie’s love for his family was ever-present, and he warmly enjoyed time spent together.
Ronnie was particularly fond of outings to get ice cream, and the staff at the Seminole Dairy Queen knew him by name, a testament to his friendly nature and ability to make lasting connections within his community.
He is survived by a devoted family of cousins: Milton Pope and wife Angela of Abernathy, Mike Motheral and wife Marijohn of Lubbock, Jerry Shires and wife Mavis of Plano, TX, Robert Pope and wife Gwyn of Abernathy, Karen Waits of Lubbock, Dawn Westmoreland and Frank of Abernathy. He is also survived by his uncle, R.K. Motheral and wife P.J., and aunt, Billie Fern Motheral of Kress, TX. Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Keith Pope.
Family and friends are invited to remember Ronnie at a visitation on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Abell Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Abernathy Cemetery with Mike Motheral officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX.
Throughout his life, Ronnie Pope left an indelible mark on those who knew him. He will be remembered for his big heart, cheerful presence, and unwavering love for his family, friends, and the simple joys that made his days so meaningful.
