Services for Ray W. Johnson, 79, of Lubbock, TX, were held at 10:00 am Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in the Sunrise Church of Christ, Lubbock, TX, with David Peebles and Michael Park both officiating. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Johnson died on Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Lubbock, TX. He was born on April 7, 1924 in Denison, TX, to Jesse Johnson and Sarah Ellen Johnson. He served in the United States Navy as 3rd Class Petty Officer from 1941 until 1947. He married Joanna "Jo" Conway on September 27, 1948 in Dallas, TX. He moved to Lubbock, TX in September of 1955 from Levelland, TX. He was a retired Barber and later was employed by the City of Lubbock and Avis Rental Cars. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Sunrise Church of Christ in Lubbock. He is survived by his wife, Jo Johnson of Lubbock, TX. 1 son, Glen Ray Johnson of Lubbock, TX. 3 daughters, Beverly Petty of Plainview, TX, Sherry Thomas of New Deal, TX and Kim Garrison of Lubbock, TX. 1 brother, Jesse Johnson of Brownfield, TX 1 sister, Hester Holder of Lubbock, TX. 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren The family suggests memorials be sent to the American Heart Association or a favorite charity.
