L.J. Betts, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on January 26, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 81. Born on February 20, 1944, in Naples, Texas, he was the son of Hervey Lee and Lorene (Jackson) Betts. L.J. was raised in Abernathy, Texas, where he developed a strong sense of community and faith that would guide him throughout his life.

L.J. devoted 43 years of his life to a fulfilling career as a truck driver, a testament to his diligent work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. His journey through life also included dedicated service in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, where he served as an aircraft mechanic. After completing his military service, he pursued education and attained an Associates Degree in Auto Mechanics from Prairie View A&M University, following his graduation from Dunbar Struggs High School, Lubbock, Texas.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, L.J. was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, usher, and treasurer. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and his contributions to the church reflect his dedication to the community.

L.J. was a passionate man who enjoyed fishing and had a keen interest in collecting stamps and coins. These hobbies brought him great joy.

L.J. Betts is survived by his devoted wife, Felecisima “Tina” Betts of Lubbock, Texas; two children, Jevon Lafayette Bascus Sr. of Lubbock, Texas, and Ashanti Lynnette Portee of Lubbock, Texas, who is married to Kareem Bjorn Portee, Sr.; ten grandchildren, including Jevon Lafayette Bascus, Jr., RéShon Marquise Bascus, Jevaushaune Kiara Bascus, Quisean Leraé Bascus, Shuquivia Felice Stiggers, Lord Stephen Galindo, Taliyah Marie Galindo, Trayton Marquon Portee, and Kareem Bjorn Portee, Jr.; as well as Aulani Tori Portee. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and one more expected to join the family in May 2026. L.J. is also survived by siblings Artis Betts and wife Teresa of Pampa, Texas, Willie Betts of Abernathy, Texas, Mary McGaha of Houston, Texas and Carolyn Betts of Temple, Texas.

L.J. was predeceased by his siblings Hervey Betts, Larry Betts, Fayrene Reese, Barbara Bridges, Cynthia Betts, and Betty Betts.

Visitation services will be held on February 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Abell Funeral Home, Abernathy, Texas. A funeral service will take place the following day, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church, Abernathy, Texas with Rev. W.R. Bolton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow with military rights in the Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park, Lubbock, Texas. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas.

L.J. Betts will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, love for his family, and deep faith in God. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
