Leona May Mathes

Graveside services for Leona May Mathes, 85, of Lubbock, TX, will be held at 10:00 am Friday, June 24, 2022, in the Abernathy Cemetery, Abernathy, TX, with Harold Bufe officiaing. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mrs. Mathes died Friday, June 17, 2022, in Lubbock, TX. She was born September 19, 1936 in White Deer, TX to Julius and Mary Matilda (Moravitz) Bednorz. She married Howard Luther "Jack" Mathes, May 14, 1956 in Aberdeen, MD. He preceded her in death, December 15, 1998. Leona was raised in Pampa, TX and graduated from Panhandle High School where she played on the Pantherette basketball team. She moved to Lubbock in 1966 from Amarillo, TX. Leona is survived by a son, Stanley Mathes of Lubbock, 3 daughters, Sharla Mathes and Sheryl Orr both of Lubbock and Sheila Bufe of Abernathy, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 3 siblings, Mary Lee Herbert, Rosie McNamara and Doug Bednorz.
