November 30, 1920 — January 13, 2015

Rosary for Julia Paz Cortez, 93, of Abernathy, will be recited at 7:00pm, Thursday, January 15, 2015, in St. Isidore Catholic Church in Abernathy, TX. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00pm, Friday, January 16, 2015, in the same church with Rev. Jacob Puthuparambil, officiating. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mrs. Cortez died Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in Lubbock. She was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. She married Andres B. Cortez in 1939 in Lubbock, TX. They were migrant workers, settling in Abernathy in the late 1930's. She was a housewife, supporting her husband while he sharecropped. Mrs. Cortez was preceded in death by her husband, her grandaughter, Flora Hernandez, a great grandson, Larry Hernandez, Jr., and a grandson-in-law, Larry Hernandez, Sr. She is survived by 6 children, Cecilia Luera of Abernathy, Isabel Cabrera of Littlefield, Leonardo Cortez and wife, Pauline, of Lubbock, Mary Cortez of Abernathy, Valeria Joiner and husband, Greg, of Lubbock, and Lupe Ramirez and husband, Joe, of Abernathy, 21 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.
