JoAnn Cotten, born on December 5, 1939, in Petrolia, Texas, passed away on January 25, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. She was a cherished daughter to Willie Lee and Willie Ruth (Bennet) Phillips and grew up in a loving family that shaped her character and values.

JoAnn graduated from Abernathy High School, where she proudly contributed to the school's legacy as a member of the Basketball State Championship team in 1958. Her passion for sports extended beyond basketball; she was an avid fan of football and basketball throughout her life. JoAnn also found joy in her leisure activities, which included reading, watching movies, and visiting with loved ones.

A devoted pet owner, JoAnn had a special bond with her dog, Barkley, who brought her much happiness.

Her legacy continues through her loving family. JoAnn is survived by her children, Chris Locke of Ewa, Hawaii; Monica Locke of Austin, Texas; Debbie Mason of Lazbuddie, Texas; Albert Rand of Lubbock, Texas; and Mark Rand of Clyde, Texas. JoAnn's family also includes twelve grandchildren: Alisha Rosales, Ryan Mason, Jake Hamby, Jordan Stancell, Kirstie Clevenger, Miles Rand, Garrett Robertson, Fallon Rand, Chelsea Lewis, Branden Locke, Ryelan Mason, and Branson Mason. Additionally, she is survived by nineteen great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her spirit and love. JoAnn also leaves behind her sister, Edith Scudder. 

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth Phillips and Jerry Phillips, and her sister, Betty Carrolton.

A graveside service honoring JoAnn's life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 30, 2026, at Abernathy Cemetery in Abernathy, Texas with Hospice Chaplain David Eppler officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas. 

JoAnn Cotten will be remembered for her warmth, passion for life, and the profound impact she made on those around her. Her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
