Services for E.J. Pope, 89, a longtime resident of Abernathy, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Monday, September 22, 2008 in the Abernathy Church of Christ with David Bennett and Steve Gauntt officiating. Burial followed in Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Pope died at his residence Saturday, September 20, 2008. He was born January 17, 1919 in Hillsboro, TX and married Wilma Motheral on December 23,1938 in Abernathy, TX. He farmed and was an original owner of the Tuco Gin. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Downtown Bible Class, served as director of South Plains Telephone Co-op for 30 years, was a member of Hale County ASCS committee for over 20 years, and a member of American Legion. He was named honorary Chapter Farmer for the local FFA. The Pope family was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Farm Family of the year in 1974 and the Abernathy Project Show was dedicated to him in 1986. Survivors include his wife Wlma Pope , 2 sons, Charles Pope and Milton and his wife Angela and a daughter Karen Waits, all of Abernathy, 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the building fund at Church of Christ, Box 290, Abernathy, TX 79311 or to Abernathy Cemetery Assoc.
