Services for Dorothy Jean Hemphill, 79, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Thursday, March 3, 2011, in the Abernathy Church of Christ, with Steve Gauntt officiating. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mrs. Hemphill died Monday, February 28, 2011, in Hale Center, TX. She was born June 9, 1931 in Clarendon, TX, and married Earnest Junior Hemphill on September 20, 1950 in Petersburg, TX. They moved to Abernathy in 1952 from Petersburg. She was a member of the Church of Christ and had operated a home daycare from 1971 until 1995. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Wayne Hemphill , October 27, 2005. She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Earnest Hemphill of Abernathy, TX, 2 daughters, Martha Sue & Joe Peck of Paducah, Kentucky and Barabara Jean & Lee Waters of Abernathy, TX, a daughter-in-law, Kathrina Hemphill of Abernathy, TX, 1 brother, Donny Peggram of Hale Center, TX, 2 sisters, Ruby Thomas of Troy, Missouri and Inez Chambliss of Hobbs, NM, 4 grandchildren, Joshua Hemphill, Kami Hemphill, Erick Waters and Elisabeth Waters and a great grandson, Elliott Hemphill. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Children's Home of Lubbock or to Vista Care Hospice. Abell Funeral Home
