Services for Clyde Vandygriff, 74, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, November 7, 2013, in the High School Antelope Gymnasium. with Rev. Joel Perez, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, Tim Smith, President of Panhandle Fireman's & Fire Marshall Chaplain, and Ricky Marquez, Abernathy Fire Department Chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family will gather to receive friends at Abell Funeral Home, Wednesday, November 6, 2013, from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm. Mr. Vandygriff died at his home in Abernathy, Monday, November 4, 2013. He was born September 21, 1939 in Roxton, TX, where he began school, and later attended Lubbock High School. He married Cherylene Bradley on October 1, 1966 in New Deal, TX. He began his law enforcement career in 1967 with the Hale County Sheriff's Department and later was employed by the City of Abernathy as Police Chief. Clyde served on the Abernathy Volunteer Fire Department since 1967, was a member of the Petersburg Masonic Lodge and the Abernathy IOOF. He volunteered as a living historian for the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, TX. He also served as a cowboy historian at the Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock and at Ft. Griffin and Ft. Concho. He farmed as was a "jack of all trades". He was a "John Wayne" type man, saying, "What is right, is right and what is wrong, is wrong!" "Dad was my Hero" said his sons. He is preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Mahagan and a brother, James Vandygriff. He is survived by his wife, Cherylene Vandygriff of Abernathy, TX, 3 sons, John and wife Christie, Phil and wife Dawn and Kelly and wife Shawn, 4 brothers, Ronnie Vandygriff and wife Diana, Mike Vandygriff and wife Pat, Raymond Mahagan and wife Donna and Rodney Mahagan and wife Carol, a sister, Linda Puckett and husband Tommy. Clyde is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, Kassandra and Kameron Lamb, Karli Vandygriff, Cori and Conor Vandygriff, Zane and Talon Vandygriff and Kylie and Cole Vandygriff. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 266, Abernathy, TX 79311.
