Charles Pope

Graveside services for Charles Pope, 83, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, March 30, 2023, in the Abernathy Cemetery with Rev. Joel Perez officiating. The family will gather to receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Abell Funeral Home. Burial will follow services in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. He passed away Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the hospital in Lubbock, TX. Charles Wayne Pope was born January 22, 1940 to E.J. and Wilma (Motheral) Pope in Abernathy. Charles grew up in Abernathy and graduated Abernathy High School in 1959. His passion was drag racing in which he pursued a career and still holds track records in the area. Charles was a talented mechanic and started raising his family as a mechanic and parts man. Racing was in his blood and soon was past down to his sons and grandson who still race today. Charles stayed in the parts business for most of his life until it was time to take over the family farm which he loved very much. Charles stayed in farming until his death. Charles was always involved in his boys lives and kept them busy with drag racing, circle track racing, dune buggies and working on cars and trucks. He was an avid collector and enjoyed going to bingo with Kat. He was adored by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the holidays and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents E.J. and Wilma Pope (Motheral) of Abernathy and Granddaughter Leila of Orange Park, FL. Charles is survived by his Loving Partner Catherine Crabtree of Abernathy, a brother, Milton Pope and wife Angela, his sister, Karen Waits, all of Abernathy, 4 sons, Ricky Pope and wife Michelle of Lubbock, Rodney Pope and wife Pamela of Salado, TX, Steven Pope and partner Jodi of Vancouver, WA, and Jody Pope and wife Cindy of Littlefield, TX, 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
