Funeral services for Charles Watts "C.W." Barnes, 86, of Hale Center, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in the First United Methodist Church, Hale Center, TX. Rev. Norton Scrimshire, cousin to the deceased, officiated. Rev. Jimmy Cameron, pastor, assisted. Burial followed in the Hale Center Cemetery under the direction of Freeman-Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center, TX. Mr. Barnes died Saturday, July 5, 2003, in Plainview, TX. He was born on April 17, 1917 in Dimmitt, TX. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, serving during WWI, and was discharged in 1944. He married Francis Heavener in 1949 in Albuquerque, N.M. She preceded him in death in 1975. He lived in New Mexico until 1962 when he moved to Hale Center. He was employed by the Caudle Gin and Bowen Gins while living in Hale Center. He married Willo Dene Cornett Overby on June 18, 1980 in Littlefield, TX. She preceded him in death March 24, 2000. He was a member of the Hale Center First United Methodist Church. Survivors; 2 brothers, George S. Barnes of Amarillo, TX and Wesley Barnes of Plainview, TX. 1 sister, Martha Lee Barnes of Plainview, TX. 2 step-sons, Michael Overby of Hale Center, TX, and Leon Overby of Denton, TX. 1 step-grandaughter, Brandi Overby of Hale Center, TX. The family suggests memorials be sent to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch or to the First United Methodist Church, Hale Center. Abell Funeral Home
