Bryan Harkey, known to some as, husband, dad, Peepaw, Buzzard, and Wizard to name a few, was a lifelong farmer and proud member of the Abernathy, Petersburg, and New Deal communities, passed away on April 14, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born December 31, 1956, in Lubbock to Bill and Ann (Tierney) Harkey.
Bryan graduated from New Deal High School in 1975 and soon after began his life's work in farming. He spent his years working the land around New Deal and Petersburg, a calling he took great pride in. Farming was more than a livelihood to Bryan-it was who he was.
On January 2, 1981, he married Deborah Sharpe in Lubbock, and together they built a life centered around family, hard work, and community.
Bryan enjoyed staying busy outside of farming. He had a passion for drag racing, welding, and barbecuing. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren, who meant the world to him. Bryan also gave back to his community by coaching little league baseball, where he shared both his knowledge of the game and his love for it. He was a faithful member of Petersburg Methodist Church, where he found fellowship and strength.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Harkey of Lubbock; his children, Nathan Harkey and wife Kate, and Nicole Nelson and husband Brady, all of Lubbock; and his grandchildren, Wyatt Harkey, Auburn Harkey, Tatum Nelson, and Hunter Nelson, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his sister, Yvonne Griffis and husband Alva; his mother-in-law, Bobbie Sharpe; sisters-in-law, Janie Harkey, Leigh Harkey, and Pam Sharpe; and brother-in-law, Scott Sharpe and wife Jill; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bryan was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ann Harkey, father-in-law, Bud Sharpe, and brothers, Billy and Wayne Harkey.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 20, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Abell Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Abernathy Cemetery, with Rev. Joel Perez officiating.
Bryan will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love for the land, and the way he cared for his family and community.
