Billie E. Bruington, a cherished member of the Petersburg community, passed away on January 19, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on January 9, 1935, to Earl M. and Younie (Milam) Bruington in Petersburg, Texas, Billie lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community engagement.
Billie was a proud alumnus of Lipperts Business College, where he earned an Associate Degree. His career was marked by substantial contributions to his community, and he was a respected figure in various organizations. He served the Petersburg Fire Department for over 25 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment to public safety. As a member of the Lions Club for 50 years, Billie exemplified the spirit of compassion and community service. His dedication did not go unnoticed; he was honored as the Man of the Year by the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, a testament to his impact on those around him.
In addition to his service in emergency response and local clubs, Billie held significant positions in financial governance. He served as the President for the Board of Directors of First State Bank in Petersburg from 1984 to 1998, during which time he also contributed to the board of Petersburg Cemetery, Floydada Country Club, and Tri-County Little League. His affiliation with the American Institute of Banking showcased his dedication to enhancing financial education and practices within the community. Furthermore, as a member of the Masonic Lodge, Billie upheld principled values and camaraderie among his peers.
Billie's devotion extended beyond his professional life; he was a member of the Petersburg First Baptist Church, where he found fellowship and support within his faith community.
He is survived by his two sons, Dennis Bruington and his wife Jackie from Waco, Texas, and Kevin Bruington from Lubbock, Texas. Billie also leaves behind two granddaughters, Kindell Poprawa and husband Wojtek of Fort Worth, TX and Kathryn Bruington of Carrollton, TX along with two great-grandchildren, William Poprawa and Klara Poprawa, each of whom will carry on his legacy of kindness and community involvement.
Billie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ida Bruington, who passed on October 19, 2012, as well as his brother, J. W. Bruington, and two sisters, Emaline Spain and Genava Kersh.
Services for Billie will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at First Baptist Church Petersburg, TX with Rev. Sean Galloway officiating. Family will gather to receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at Abell Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas.
Family suggests that memorial be sent to the Petersburg Cemetery Association or to a favorite charity.
