Services for Betty Gale McDougal Davis, 71, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 10:00 am Thursday, June 30, 2011, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Brownlow and Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The Davis family will receive friends at Abell Funeral Home, Wednesday from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Mrs. Davis died Monday, June 27, 2011, in Lubbock, TX. She was born July 20, 1939 in Lubbock to Bennie Allen McDougal and Laura Faye Campbell Appleton. She moved to the farm in the Abernathy area with her family in 1941. She was a 1957 graduate of Abernathy High School and married Jimmie Davis on June 15, 1958 in Abernathy. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Abernathy. The Davis family was named Farm Family of the Year in 1978. She served on the Abernathy School Board from 1982-1988, Abernathfy EMS from 1982 - 1993 and served as secretary of the Abernathy Ex-Students Association from 1984 until 2009. She was an honorary member of the FFA and FHA, served on the Hale County Appraisal District Board from 1990-1993, and was named as Abernathy Distinguished Alumni in 2004. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jimmie Davis of Abernathy, 3 daughters, Cindy Hunt and husband David, Patsy Weidner and Joan Wesley and husband Scot all of Abernathy, a sister, Dr. Barbara McDougal of Lubbock, TX and 4 grandchildren, Erin Mueller and husband Sean of Lubbock, Justin Wesley and his wife Ciara of Denton, TX, Ethan Hunt of Whiteman AFB, Missouri and Jordan Weidner of Abernathy. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Ex-Students Assoc, P. O. Box 1, Abernathy, TX 79311. Abell Funeral Home
