Services for A. L. Stone, Jr, 82, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 20, 2010, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Burial followed services in the Pearce Chapel- Strip Cemetery, East of Abernathy, TX. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Stone died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, in Lubbock, TX. He was born in Knox County, TX March 8, 1928, the son of A. L., Sr. and Dorothy Stone. The family moved to Abernathy in the Fall of 1928 when he was 6 months of age. A. L. graduated from Abernathy High School in 1946 and worked on his father's farm and was employed by a contractor building houses in Lubbock, TX. He served in the 231st and the 194th Engineer Combat Battalions of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge in September of 1952, he worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Lubbock until beginning his own farming career in January of 1954. He married Pauline Elizabeth Lutrick on May 24, 1954. He retired from farming in 1998. A. L. was a 32nd degree Mason. He is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Pauline Stone of Abernathy, TX, children, JoAnn and Roddy Shipman of Guthrie, TX, Don and DiAnn Stone of Abernathy, TX, Susan and Jeff McDorman of Wimberley, TX and Trey Stone of Missouri City, TX, grandchildren, Steven and Michelle, Dustin and Stefanie and Avery Stone, Joli & Nick Martin, Krissy and Shaley Shipman, Gaston and Andrea, Drew and Brock McDorman, great grandchildren, Rylee White, Maddox Martin and Case Stone, a brother, Delton and Lanell Stone and 2 sisters, Billie and Larry Grimsley and Judy Stracener. The family suggests memorials be sent to Pearce Chapel-Strip Cemetery, 1603 Ave. F, Abernathy, TX 79311, First United Methodist Church, 704 Ave. D, Abernathy, TX 79311, Scottish Rite Learning Center, 1101 70th Street, Lubbock, TX 79412 or to a favorite charity.
